Meaningful Play with Mixed Media

A Collaborative Exploration with Judith and Darcy

THIS IS A 6-HOUR WORKSHOP: 2 WEEKLY SESSIONS OF 3 HOURS

Sunday, November 23 and 30 FROM 1 PM -4 PM

LEVEL: BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATES

MAXIMUM: 10 STUDENT PER CLASS

Co-Head: Judith Tye & Darcy Johnson

Course Description:

This course offers an opportunity to explore making meaningful art using a variety of mixed-media techniques and materials. Students will gain insights and experience in the visual arts’ capacity to express both the personal story and its universal appeal.

Judith Tye and Darcy Johnson will co-teach various techniques to create layers of colour, marks, patterns, photo images, and text in mixed media art. We will experiment with creating and combining separate ‘layers’ into a personal piece of artwork that each student will take home. Students will also end up with extra materials they can use in the future and the knowledge of how to use them in various ways. This is an opportunity to explore your visual language through creative play.

We will begin with an abstract layer in acrylic paint by choosing a colour palette that creates a unique mood and atmosphere. There will then be time for spontaneous mark-making that will later add a layer to enhance visual balance and movement. Finally, students will be given several techniques for transferring photographic images and/or text to finish the art piece. Throughout the workshop, there will be opportunities for gentle and positive critique.

Techniques Covered:

  • Colour mixing from primary pigments to create different colour harmonies, a student can choose from.

  • Composition: creating balance, space, and movement in an artwork using line, shape, and pattern.

  • Collaging using acrylic mediums to combine made and found images

  • Experimenting with techniques photo transfer, Gelli plate printing, stamping, and stenciling.

This course is suitable for both beginners and experienced artists. Students will walk away with at least one painting and a deeper knowledge of mixed media and creating art with personal meaning. Come and explore your creative process and unique responses to visual art. You are encouraged to bring a willingness to try new things and a courageous mindset for exploration and play.

Materials: Judith and Darcy will provide various drawing materials, paper, paint, ink, mediums, and brushes. Please bring any painting materials that you like to use. Also, bring images or objects that have colour palettes you enjoy. Any photos you wish to use should be photocopied to transfer them. Also, consider bringing magazine images that can be transferred using a different process.
